The expression itself refers to the act of tightening one’s belt as a result of losing weight, especially as a result of tough economic times. For example, you may have to trim your grocery budget which leads to weight loss, but instead of purchasing a smaller pair of pants, the more economical solution would be to cinch one’s belt tighter.

Recent research, however, shows that the opposite may actually be true. If you are stressed out about your financial situation, you are more likely to pack on the pounds.

Jason Block, MD, and lead author of the 2009 Harvard Medical School study, said “finances were among the most consistent influences we saw [on stress-related weight gain.]”

Overspending and overeating are closely related. People tend to over-indulge because they are stressed and need comfort or feel “empty” inside and are looking for something to fill that void. Getting a handle on one issue (for example, sticking to a budget), may garner a feeling of self-worth and help to improve the other issue as well (the desire to gain comfort from food subsides).
